Springtime Soulful Sundown HELP NEEDED [Mar. 30th, 2006|04:42 pm]
University of Hartford Unitarian Universalists

remj
Hey folks,

We need people to help out with the Soulful Sundown this Saturday 7-8 PM!

We need:
- Ushers to greet and direct people into the Sanctuary as they arrive and to the Library for food and refreshments afterwards
- 2-4 people to read the selected Spring-themed poems between the songs

If you can't be there for the whole thing, please consider ushering at the opening! Let me know if you can help out in these ways.

Cheers,
Rachel

ANNOUNCEMENTS! [Mar. 14th, 2006|09:31 pm]
University of Hartford Unitarian Universalists

[Current Mood |busy]

Hey everyone,

I have a LOT of important announcements, so PLEASE read on...

MARCH 29th - Class registration begins
I want attendance to be at its best and there are a number of people that I know are interested in the group, but are not attending. Since we are approaching the time of putting together our class schedules for next semester, I would like to know if this is because Tuesdays at 5:30 PM is a bad time to meet. Please give feedback on whether this is a good time or not. I'm open to suggestions of a different meeting time for next semester, but I want the meeting time to be chosen and solidified before class registration on MARCH 29th.

APRIL 1st - Springtime Soulful Sundown
We are co-hosting this event with the Unitarian Meeting House. This takes place Saturday, April 1st @ 7 - 8 PM at the Unitarian Meeting House (50 Bloomfield Ave, Hartford, CT) This is a combination concert + informal worship featuring the live music of local group Blended Groove (www.blendedgrooveband.com) and is FREE! Please let me know if you would like to attend and/or RSVP on facebook.com.

APRIL 2nd - APRIL 23rd - Sunday Drum Circle
We're starting up our Drum circle again. They'll be held (almost) every Sunday in April @ 1 PM, on the porch/dock of Village Pond, next to Konover. Weather permitting of course! Bring drums, shakers, pots & pans, etc.

APRIL 2nd - Tentative date for Bash the Trash Workshop
We are in discussion with the environmental campus group, HEDucate about co-hosting a workshop on making percussion instruments from trash items. This would also be a fundraiser, involving a $1 donation. Please keep an eye out for these items: chopsticks (or anything else you think would make a good beater), coffee cans, soup cans, soda can tabs, papertowel rolls, margarine tubs, wrapping paper, wire, duct tape, metal bottle caps, and Y-shaped fallen branches.

APRIL 5th - Budget Request Form Due
I'm in the process of working out the budget request form for SGA so if there are any materials/workshops/speakers/events that you would like to see us have/do next year, now is the time to bring these ideas to me and we'll request it in our budget ASAP.

APRIL 18th - E-board elections
We'll be holding elections for E-board positions for next year. Positions will be:
President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer

If you are interested in running for any of these positions, it is vitally important that you attend this meeting. If you cannot attend, contact me ASAP. The job descriptions are pretty usual, but the biggest requirement is being passionate about the campus ministry group.

APRIL 21-22nd - RADIUS Young Adult Conference
District conference on young adult ministry. Go to www.uua.org/yacm/radius/ for more info . Contact me if you are interested in going and we can carpool.

APRIL 30th - End of the Year UHUUS Potluck Picnic!
Celebrating that we've made it through the year with a fun potluck picnic at Elizabeth Park. Even if you haven't attended a single meeting, join us for food, frisbee, and fellowship. Time to be decided. I'll be setting up a carpool closer to the date.

And, as always, our meetings are being held Tuesdays @ 5:30 PM in Gengras Room 131, please attend. And if you haven't, check us out at facebook.com.

gathering news [Feb. 6th, 2006|02:17 pm]
University of Hartford Unitarian Universalists

remj
Hey folks,

Last week was our first gathering of the semester. We went over some news:

Sunday, March 5th
The Unitarian Meeting house is going to two services, one at 9 AM and one at 11 AM. For those of you that enjoy a more formal worship, you can sleep in an extra half an hour on Sunday!

Saturday, April 1st 7 PM - 8PM
@ the Unitarian Meeting House
We are co-hosting a Soulful Sundown with the Unitarian Society of Hartford. This event is a melding of a worship and a concert and will be featuring the group Blended Groove. Refreshments and fellowship will follow.

When the weather gets nice again, we will be resuming our drum circle. E-mail me with any suggested times and locations on campus.

We need to do 4 fundraisers this semester! We discussed doing a 50/50 raffle. Any other ideas?

Please attend the gathering tomorrow! We will be meeting again in the Spectrum office, located on the first floor of Gengras, next to the I.D. office. Meeting time is at 5:30 PM, but you are encouraged to attend a little earlier at 5 PM to socialize. I'm baking brownies!

Cheers,

First gathering this Tuesday! [Jan. 27th, 2006|01:33 pm]

[Current Mood |excitedexcited]

Gatherings for University of Hartford Unitarian Universalists for the Spring 2006 semester are currently being held Tuesdays @ 5 PM in the Spectrum office (located first floor of Gengras next to the ID office).

Our first gathering will be this Tuesday, Jan. 31st! As always, you are welcome to bring a reading or song for the informal worship. You can also bring your dinner! And your friends!

I apologize that this isn't a convenient time for everyone to meet, but we can't fit with everyone's schedules. I'd rather set a time and have some people unable to make it than never set a time and go another semester without meetings. I'd like to make this a regular meeting time from now on so that people can schedule classes around it next semester. Please contact me if this is a problem.

Cheers,
Rachel

Hey everyone,

Classes are starting up again tomorrow, which means that it's time for us
to start meeting again. Our first informal meeting of the semester will
be this Wednesday, the 31st, @ 7 PM. All are welcome to attend, but I
especially need all E-board to be there. We have much to discuss about
what we want to get done this year. Please try to attend!

Hope to see you soon!

Rachel

Hi folks,

So I was thinking that just because school is out, it doesn't mean that
we cannot get together. If anyone is in the Hartford area and would like
to set up something social, like a weekly dinner or what have you, let me
know!

Cheers,
Rachel

Website! [May. 18th, 2005|03:46 pm]

[Current Mood |accomplished]

Hey guys,

I put together a website for the group (and a rather snazzy-looking one if I say so myself) so go check it out!

When we are a registered group with the SGA and I will be able to get access to hartford.edu our URL will be shorter and better, but until then, the website is at:

http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/rajohnson/

Also, I want to let you guys know that you can post to this if you have an lj account. If you don't have one, get one for free by going to www.livejournal.com. If you do have an lj account, JOIN and when you want to post, simply select 'uhuus' in the 'Post to' menu to send your entry to this page.

You can post pretty much whatever you want as long as it is relevant to the campus ministry, spirituality, or social action. I want to hear any ideas you come up with on how we can make the group really great!

Also, let me know if you'd rather have a Yahoo! group instead. If that is easier, I can adjust. I just abhor all the ads, personally.

Cheers,
Rachel

ah, bureaucracy [May. 11th, 2005|11:34 am]

[Current Mood |optimisticoptimistic]

Hey guys,

I got all of our paperwork in: club contact info, minutes, constitution and SGA told me that starting next fall semester, we will be on a 16-week (fall semester) 'probation' during which we need to prove that we are an active club in order to be registered with SGA. That means that we need to:

- Have 2 fundraisers
- Have at least 2 events (I'm thinking we make the drum circle a monthly thing while the weather is nice since it doesn't cost any money to do)

Don't worry, we'll wade through the bureaucracy and come out on top. If you have any questions or suggestions, don't hesitate to post them to the mailing list at: uofhartford@uuyan.org.

Have a safe and fun summer!

Cheers,
Rachel Johnson

something to ponder [Apr. 29th, 2005|12:42 pm]
University of Hartford Unitarian Universalists

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

by Marianne Williamson
